KSA Careers Panel

Save-the-Date message to KSA members

Dear Kitchener Scholar,

Please save the date for a brand new event in the KSA calendar- a Careers Panel for current undergraduate Scholars, recent graduates, and any Kitchener Scholars interested in re-evaluating their career path. It will be held on Tuesday 16 October 2018 from 5 30 to 8 30 pm, at the Pure Craft Bar and Kitchen in Birmingham, very near the main railway station. Food and drinks will be served.

For some time the KSA committee has been planning to provide more events outside London and to move beyond our well attended ceremonial and social events to deliver other experiences of value to Kitchener Scholars. Our careers panel will give an opportunity to hear from members of our community in various walks of life and from different generations; they will have many insights on building a successful career journey, whilst sharing thoughts and listening to your concerns, all in an informal networking environment.

We are in the middle of completing the Panel as we want to take care to have a balanced group: so far people from industry, finance, e-commerce, TV/media, and public relations are in the frame.

The path our panellists have taken to date

The role of networking, and formal things like CVs and interviews

How to re-invent yourself every so often....changing direction and 'creating your own luck'

How to manage a career even in corporate or professional positions from a 'portfolio' point of view

Avoiding sliding into ‘non-graduate’ roles, other than in temporary situations

Mentoring and sources of advice

Dealing with the inevitable challenges along the road

Life-balance: fulfilment, purpose, happiness, money, family, location etc.

Birmingham is very central on the rail network. People from a radius including Birmingham, Oxford, Bristol, Bath, Nottingham, Warwick, Loughborough, Sheffield, Coventry, Manchester etc. should be able to get there cheaply and easily. A London departure point is of course perfectly possible by rail or coach, and other places further afield with a little more effort. We are planning the early-ish start at 5 30pm to allow everyone to get home the same evening.

For those planning to make a day of it, Birmingham has some interesting sites such as Town Hall/Council building and the Museum and Art Gallery which contains the Saxon Hoard...and a large art and historical collection.

The venue is the Pure Craft Bar and Kitchen, 30 Waterloo St, Birmingham, B2 5TJ just round the corner from New Street Station. The refreshments will be free of charge…see https://www.purecraftbars.com/ under Birmingham for more information.

We really look forward to seeing you in Birmingham on 16 October 2018; please make the effort to come for an instructive and enjoyable session. I am sure you won’t be disappointed.

To help our planning, please send an indication of interest already to:

Best wishes
